About Dartington Morris

You are here

  1. About

We are based in the small village of Dartington, near Totnes in South Devon, although our members come from a much wider area from the South Hams to Torbay, Exeter to Plymouth and Newton Abbot to the southern edge of Dartmoor. We dance all around this area on Friday evenings during the summer, occasional Fridays during the winter and at other special events throughout the year, such as village fetes and wedding receptions.

The side was formed in 1968 as a men's Morris dancing side and in 2021 we decided to welcome dancers of any gender. Our musicians have been made up from both men and women since the early days.

We perform Cotswold Morris dances, and we have a North Skelton Longsword team. We have occasionally performed Isle of Man Scallop Dances. Our wide repertoire of Cotswold dances is explained in the A-Z of Morris Dances, as is our reconstructed dances from the village of Filkins in Oxfordshire.

Following a dance performance, we enjoy a folk music and song session in a nearby pub and we have a long tradition of doing this, with many fine singers and musicians in the side. While performing, we often collect voluntary donations from our audience and we sometimes perform for a fee for private events. You can read more about this on our Donations page.

We are a member side of the Morris Ring, the international organisation of Morris dancers.
